The life of a firefighter can be thrilling, adrenaline filled and occasionally dangerous.
But between calls? Of course, there can be some time to kill.
In those quiet hours, the Ace Brigade was born.
Give a bunch of firefighters and EMTs a steaming pot of coffee and a deck of cards, and those hours of waiting can disappear in no time.
Our newest mug, each one hand-spun by our friends at Grey Fox Pottery, is a tribute to our lifesaving, card-playing brothers and sisters — all members of the Ace Brigade.
The game doesn’t much matter. Poker or Gin Rummy. War or even Go Fish. Games of skill or games of luck. As long as there are four aces and 52 cards, the Ace Brigade competition is fast and furious.
Coffee is essential, too.
You’ve got to be alert and stay alert because you never know when the next call is coming. You never know when you’ll have to rush out the door to fight a fire, rescue accident victims or face down some scenario you never even imagined.
Sometimes, the Ace Brigade gets together and the call never comes. We don’t mind at all. Because the best coffee always leads to the best trash talk. And we love that, too.

It still feels like it was yesterday when the bright, sunny skies of a September morning, our nation came under attack. Lives were lost. Families were shattered and we still mourn for those that will never return home. Time has moved on, but we will never forget the men and women who ran full speed into the face of terror, without a second thought, ready to save lives. Each year, the anniversary of September 11 comes and we pause to remember.
We work long hours.
As firefighters, that’s just how it is. The firehouse has to be manned 24 hours a day, 7 days a week, all year long. No matter when that call comes in, we have to be ready, energized and ready for whatever challenge lies ahead.
But we know we’re not alone. We meet people all the time who work just as hard, just as long. Blue collar, white collar. Hard work doesn’t discriminate.
We all put in the time because that’s what the job calls for.
One thing most us seem to have in...
It was 3:30 a.m., and they were smiling.
That’s when the workday begins for the first shift of men and women filing into the factory at Pierce Manufacturing. These are hardworking folks who love their job.
They loved it just a little bit more on that day last week because we were there to greet each one of them with a fresh cup of Fire Dept. Coffee.
