Our Tribute to ‘Real Women in the Fire Service'

Our Tribute to ‘Real Women in the Fire Service'

March 06, 2019

Close your eyes and imagine a firefighter.

In full gear from helmet to boots. Jumping aboard the truck or riding an engine, racing to the scene of a blazing fire.

Ready to do whatever it takes to put out the flames. To save lives. To get the job done.

A hero in every sense of the word.

She is amazing.

This week we’re celebrating International Women’s Day and iWomen (International Association of Women in Fire & Emergency Service) by launching a new video called “Real Women in the Fire Service.”

We filmed this video in partnership with LION, the largest family-owned manufacturer of first responder personal protective equipment (PPE) in the United States, with a mission to inspire the next generation of firefighters.

The video was produced and directed by our friend Jason Patton of Fire Department Chronicles, and we couldn’t be more thrilled about how it turned out.

It’s our tribute to all the women who ignored the doubters and chased their dream. The fire service is so much better for it. And we need more women like them.

“Our goal for this video was to inspire the 15-year-old girl sitting on the couch wondering if it was possible to become a firefighter,” Patton said. “But, I hope every woman, no matter what age, watches this video and realizes that not only can they become a firefighter but they should become a firefighter to inspire the generations of little girls that will follow them.”

Women are not new to the fire service. They’ve been involved in the firefighting industry for over 200 years, with each year showing an increase in career firefighters. In the U.S., it’s estimated 6,200 women work as full-time firefighters and officers with an additional 35-40,000 women in the volunteer fire service.

They have earned our respect and so much more.

“Many people have this incorrect picture of women firefighters as pen pushers,” said Sarah Franklin, a firefighter for the Broward Sheriff’s Office and one of the featured women. “I’m proud to be a part of a movement to change this outdated perspective.”

As professional firefighters ourselves, it has been our honor to work alongside some of the strongest women we’ve ever known — women like Sarah Franklin and the others highlighted in the video. They represent the very best of who we are and what we do for our communities.

And yet, we have just begun to tap this vast pool of potential firefighters. We hope this video can do a small part to change that. We hope it inspires more young girls to dream of a career in the fire service and more women to follow through on those dreams.

It will make us all stronger. It will make us all safer. It will make us all proud.

Which is why Fire Dept. Coffee prides itself on giving back to those who have sacrificed so much for their families and for our country. And it’s also just one reason why our Founder and CEO, Luke Schneider founded this coffee comp...

It’s that time of year again when friends and families are getting together during the joyous (and sometimes stressful) occasions of the holidays. And with so many options to choose from and the many different sales, including on Black Friday, Small Business Saturday, and Cyber Monday, it all can be overwhelming. Not to mention, it can be a tough business trying to figure out what firefighters, in particular, want for the holidays.
