The Heroes Behind the Heroes: Fire Dept. Coffee Takes Over Pierce Manufacturing

The Heroes Behind the Heroes: Fire Dept. Coffee Takes Over Pierce Manufacturing

August 21, 2018

It was 3:30 a.m., and they were smiling.

Really smiling.

That’s when the workday begins for the first shift of men and women filing into the factory at Pierce Manufacturing. These are hardworking folks who love their job.

They loved it just a little bit more on that day last week because we were there to greet each one of them with a fresh cup of Fire Dept. Coffee.

You see, Pierce Manufacturing builds fire trucks like nobody’s business. They are hands down, one of the nation’s best. They are the heroes behind the heroes. They make it all possible.

And they deserve nothing less than the best coffee to jump-start their workday. That’s why we staged a Fire Dept. Coffee takeover at the Pierce factory in Appleton, Wisconsin.

Without a doubt, this was one of Fire Dept. Coffee’s proudest moments. We have always admired the quality, reliability and innovation that Pierce delivers. So we were on top of the world to be able to return the favor and deliver for them.

Our partner Jason Patton, the founder of Fire Department Chronicles and the star of our online videos, arrived well before sunrise, and he was up to his usual shenanigans. He quickly disposed of any and all “lesser-quality product” and made sure the Pierce team had the proper caffeinated fuel to do the job right.

Actually, the truth is they always do the job right. Pierce has been a leader in the industry for more than 100 years. They started out building fire trucks on Ford Model T chassis in a converted church.

They know the secret to creating a great fire truck is great people and a company that takes care of their own.

The most impressive thing to us was the median career life of their employees — 17 years!” Jason said. “In fact, most people that I spoke with had been there for over 22 years.”

For Jason, visiting the Pierce factory was an awe-inspiring experience. That morning, more than 600 workers came through the door. Each has their own part to play in creating top-of-the-line equipment that helps firefighters get where they need to go and do what they need to do.

Pierce takes pride in building custom fire trucks to meet the exacting needs of firefighters across the country. The Pierce factory in Appleton is massive, more than 364,000 square feet dedicated to precision and performance. They know that, in this business, details matter and every second counts.

You can spend hours walking the factory and taking it all in. Advanced firefighting technology and the life-saving innovations are born right there. Jason was like a kid in a candy store. But none of that is what he’ll remember most.

What most people don’t think about are the men and women who work tirelessly to build those trucks,” Jason said. “The people that get out of their beds every day to ensure that those firefighters that you see have perfectly designed, well oiled and flawlessly assembled fire trucks to save the lives of the community members that they serve.”

Visiting Pierce, Jason saw firsthand what makes the company special.

They take care of their employees.

That makes those workers proud to be a part of a winning team.

That leads them to build great products, always innovating to discover something even greater.

That creates loyal customers, firefighters who have all they need to serve their communities.

In the end, everyone involved is proud of the work they do.

Now, at Pierce Manufacturing, they’re drinking Fire Dept. Coffee. And we are honored and humbled to serve our heroes.

It still feels like it was yesterday when the bright, sunny skies of a September morning, our nation came under attack. Lives were lost. We work long hours. As firefighters, that’s just how it is. The firehouse has to be manned 24 hours a day, 7 days a week, all year long. No matter when that call comes in, we have to be ready, energized and ready for whatever challenge lies ahead. But we know we’re not alone. We meet people all the time who work just as hard, just as long. Blue collar, white collar. Hard work doesn’t discriminate. We all put in the time because that’s what the job calls for. One thing most us seem to have in...
