This Ain’t No Third Wave Coffee

This Ain’t No Third Wave Coffee

July 12, 2018

Have you ever heard the expression “The Third Wave of Coffee” before?

They say it’s the latest phase in the history of high-quality coffee — the next evolution in fancy, craft java. But you know what, that’s hipster stuff. That’s not what we do at Fire Dept. Coffee.

Let us give you a quick crash-course on the three waves of coffee, and then we’ll tell you why we’re better than that, why you’re better than that, and why we are so grateful to have you on our side.

The First Wave

This is where it began: coffee for mass consumption.

During the First Wave, coffee was designed to be easily accessible. Some people point to the early- to mid-1900s, while others will say it dates back to the 1800s. No matter the time frame, this is when it became relatively easy to find coffee in stores and restaurants, and people could also brew it in their homes.

The First Wave gave rise to coffee brands you typically see in a can in grocery stores. So, there’s that.

The Second Wave

The latter half of the 20th century ushered in the next wave.

Suddenly, coffee wasn’t just coffee anymore. Now, we had espressos and lattes and frappuccinos. Ordering a cup got a lot more complex. Coffee shops large and small began to dot the landscape.

You can thank the Second Wave for Seattle-based coffee.

The Third Wave

Then came the Third Wave.

It started out with a greater focus on the quality of coffee. Companies gave more attention to finding the perfect coffee bean to create the very best flavor.

Then things got weird. Those hipsters took over and turned coffee into a status symbol — something to show off to make themselves feel as though they were part of the high-class society and better than the next person.

It’s not our thing.

A Wave of Our Own

At Fire Dept. Coffee, we roast high-quality coffee with a mission, not for a status symbol.

First and foremost, we’re here to bring people together.

We roast easy-drinking coffee for hardworking people. We do it to celebrate each and every one of you — not just firefighters, but also men and women everywhere who work long hours to get the job done.

We do it to help you stay alert and ready and to make your days a little better.

It’s important to us to help take care of those people when they need it most. That’s why we’ve donated portions of our proceeds to charities whose work we admire.

It’s also why we’re preparing to launch the Fire Dept. Coffee Foundation to help support first responders who are recovering from serious injuries.

We’re honored to do it, and we couldn’t do it without you. So thank you for riding this wave with us!

If you’re interested in being a part of everything that we do at Fire Dept. Coffee, all you have to do is buy some of our high-quality coffee. With every bag of coffee, t-shirt, mug, or other Fire Dept. Coffee product that you buy, a portion of the proceeds go towards helping a good cause. Be a part of something bigger than the Third Wave. We Pause to Remember

September 09, 2018

It still feels like it was yesterday when the bright, sunny skies of a September morning, our nation came under attack. Lives were lost. Families were shattered and we still mourn for those that will never return home. Time has moved on, but we will never forget the men and women who ran full speed into the face of terror, without a second thought, ready to save lives. Each year, the anniversary of September 11 comes and we pause to remember.

Coffee is the Secret Weapon of the American Workforce
Coffee is the Secret Weapon of the American Workforce

August 30, 2018

We work long hours. As firefighters, that’s just how it is. The firehouse has to be manned 24 hours a day, 7 days a week, all year long. No matter when that call comes in, we have to be ready, energized and ready for whatever challenge lies ahead. But we know we’re not alone. We meet people all the time who work just as hard, just as long. Blue collar, white collar. Hard work doesn’t discriminate. We all put in the time because that’s what the job calls for. One thing most us seem to have in...

The Heroes Behind the Heroes: Fire Dept. Coffee Takes Over Pierce Manufacturing

August 21, 2018

It was 3:30 a.m., and they were smiling. Really smiling. That’s when the workday begins for the first shift of men and women filing into the factory at Pierce Manufacturing. These are hardworking folks who love their job. They loved it just a little bit more on that day last week because we were there to greet each one of them with a fresh cup of Fire Dept. Coffee.
