Are you looking for an excuse to justify your coffee addiction? We’re giving you thirteen! And they’re not excuses: the health benefits of drinking coffee have been proven by several studies and cover various areas of physical and mental wellbeing. Let’s get cracking, so that you can then brew yourself another cup of coffee without feeling guilty.
The extra energy that you feel after drinking a few cups of joe is not a placebo: caffeine is a stimulant! When it reaches your brain, it blocks adenosine, which is an inhibitory neurotransmitter. This results in an increase of dopamine and norepinephrine, which make you feel more energetic.
As well as your energy levels, coffee acts on other aspects of your brain: while the effects can change from person to person, it’s known to boost your memory, vigilance, reaction time, and mental functions in general, favoring concentration.
Caffeine increases adrenaline levels in your blood and tells your cells to start breaking down body fat, making these acids available as an energy fuel. The result? An 11-12% improvement in your physical performance!
It’s not a coincidence that most fat-burning supplements include caffeine! By being one of the few natural substances that were proven to stimulate fat burning, it can boost your metabolic rate by 3 to 11%.
Naturally found in food, antioxidants are beneficial compounds that help defend your cells from damage. The good news? Coffee is packed full of them!
Several studies have shown that drinking coffee on a regular basis will significantly reduce your chances of developing type 2 diabetes, which is a major health problem that affects millions of people worldwide.
With liver and colorectal cancer respectively being the third and fourth major causes of cancer death, it comes as a relief to know that coffee is known to lower the risk of developing them.
Thanks to caffeine’s cellular action, coffee drinkers have between a 32 and 60% lower risk of developing this neurodegenerative condition.
Unfortunately, we still don’t have a cure for them. However, a healthy diet and regular exercise are believed to help prevent them. Another little helper? Yep, you guessed it: our favorite caffeinated drink.
This serious condition consists in your liver being largely replaced by scar tissue, but drinking four or more cups of coffee a day has been shown to lower its risk.... up to a whopping 80%!
Four cups of coffee a day seems to be the magical number when it comes to sclerosis, too: it prevents the neural inflammation that can potentially result in developing this disease.
Are you part of the milk and sugar squad? You might want to consider giving black coffee a go! It’s been recently found to kill the bacteria that promote tooth decay.
Because of its healthy nutrients and the fact that it helps decrease the chances of developing so many common diseases, coffee can ultimately help you live longer. More than one study has found caffeinated folks to have a much lower risk of premature death.
Happy to hear about all these health benefits of coffee? We hope we’ve given you enough counterpoints for the next time someone tells you ‘another coffee? You’ve already had one, today!’. Also, you don’t need that kind of negativity in your life.
