Can Coffee Help You Live Longer? Science Says Yes

You don’t need a study to tell you that coffee gets you through the day. But a new one suggests it might actually help you stick around longer than that, too.

A study of 46,000 U.S. adults spanning 1999-2018, recently published in the Journal of Nutrition, found that drinking black coffee may be linked to a lower risk of death. 

That’s an idea that we couldn’t help digging deeper into.

So, what exactly did the study find? And why does it hit home for those of us who live life on call?

What the Study Found

A team of researchers from Tufts University followed tens of thousands of adults and looked at how their coffee habits related to long-term health.

The big takeaway?

People who drank one to three cups of black coffee per day had a 14–17% lower risk of dying from any cause compared to non-coffee drinkers.

“We’re not in the business of making health claims, and we’re certainly not saying that drinking Fire Department Coffee will add years to your life,” FDC founder and CEO Luke Schneider said. “But it’s always interesting when the science backs up what so many of us already feel: a good cup of coffee can make a real difference.”

The study found the biggest benefit from just a couple of cups of black coffee a day. No heavy cream. No syrupy sweeteners. Just coffee in its purest form.

The benefits seemed strongest for those who kept it simple. Once people started piling on the sugar or full-fat dairy, the health connection weakened significantly. The researchers pointed to antioxidants and anti-inflammatory compounds in coffee as likely contributors. Caffeine helps, too, but it’s not the only factor at play.

Let’s be clear, this is observational research, not a guarantee. Drinking coffee isn’t a replacement for medical advice, and the study didn’t prove cause and effect. But it does line up with what other recent studies have suggested: that black coffee, in moderation, may play a small yet meaningful role in supporting long-term health.
