That last-minute cup of coffee before getting to work can truly save the day despite that misspelled version of your name on the paper cup, but… a freshly-brewed mug at home? It’ll save your wallet. Cost aside, there are lots of other advantages of brewing coffee at home, regardless of what method and coffee maker you choose. These are our favorite ones.
We’ve already touched on it, so we might as well tell you more about it. With the average cup of coffee costing $2.99, brewing your own can definitely make the difference at the end of the month, especially if you require more than one cup a day to function properly (we can totally relate). For example, take our 12oz bag of medium-roast coffee ($12.99): if you use around 20g for your average mug, you’ll get 19/20 cups out of it. Which means only $0.68 per serving!
If you’ve ever had a bad experience when brewing coffee at home, it was probably just not the right method for you. Luckily, there are lots of different coffee makers to choose from!
Are you looking forward to getting involved with the brewing process? Go for a manual pour over. Would you rather press a button, instead? Then an automatic dripper or single-serve coffee maker will become your best buddy. Need a stronger kick? Espresso machine or moka pot. More robust flavors? French press. On the go? AeroPress.
As for froth aficionados, integrated steaming wands or separate milk frothers will allow you to create the best lattes and cappuccinos, too.
No need to compromise and settle for a roast that doesn’t really excite your taste buds! Instead of always having to rely on the same blend, experiment with different flavors until you find the perfect one for you. Figure out which type of coffee roast tickles your caffeinated senses, so that you’ll always have a pot of joe to look forward to when you wake up in the morning.
If you think that spending an extra five minutes brewing coffee at home will make you late for work, you clearly haven’t considered the unexpected coffee shop queue! Brewing coffee at home and carrying it with you in a travel mug to drink it on your commute is also an eco-friendlier solution than relying on disposable coffee cups every day, which take decades to decompose.
When brewing coffee at home, you’re the barista! This means that you can tweak every single aspect of the extraction process, from beans to grind size to hot water temperature and brew time. By playing with these variables, you’ll influence the final flavor of your cup of coffee, without having to settle for the usual standard drinks.
Once you’ve familiarized yourself with the extraction process and the different variables, you’ll be able to brew like a barista champion, meaning that you’ll get the very best cups of joe that you’ve ever tasted in your life. The secret? Use the freshest grounds or grind your own coffee beans to ensure the most nuanced flavors.

How often? As frequently as it suits you. You’re the head barista, after all.
