Wired Cafe: Rockford, IL

Wired Cafe: Rockford, IL

March 28, 2019

You already know you can get your favorite Fire Dept. Coffee from our website. And if you’re lucky, maybe it’s always brewing at your office or firehouse.

But did you know that we also supply our coffee to cafes and coffeehouses?

Wired Cafe in Rockford, Illinois, is a local favorite and a perfect example. They were one of our earliest supporters and remain one of our best customers. Crystal Douglas owns Wired Cafe and runs the business with her daughters, Shanna and Stefanie.

These ladies know great coffee and great food. They serve Fire Dept. Coffee alongside some of the most delicious dishes around, all with a side of friendly service and an incredible atmosphere.

We asked Crystal to join us for a quick Q&A to talk about her love of coffee, family and keeping her customers wired and well fed. If you’re ever in Rockford, stop in and see her.

What do you love about coffee?

What is NOT to love about coffee? The smell, the taste and the happiness it gives me. It is truly liquid joy!

What's your favorite coffee drink?

A 4oz double shot Americano when I'm at Wired. When I'm home, it's a light roast French press.

What makes a good coffee?

Well, the bean and proper roasting, of course, but I also believe that the quality of the water is just as important. You can take the perfectly roasted bean and ruin it by using poor quality water. That's why we invested in a top of the line filtration system for Wired, and at home, I use a quality bottled water to make my coffee.

Also, I believe in the experience of drinking the coffee. I am a “vessel” snob. I like to drink my coffee out of the perfect mug — not TOO big and not TOO small, that fits my hand.

What is the best breakfast entree to eat with your coffee?

Well, I like to have that first cup by itself. Then a good fresh pastry is always good with the second hot cup of coffee.

What made you want to start a cafe?

I tried the corporate world and discovered very quickly it wasn't for me, and this was something that my daughters and I could do together. We each brought different talents and perspectives to the business. Also, we always ended up in the local coffee shops whenever we ventured out together so of course, we thought, “We could do this!”

Where did you get the inspiration for your menu?

That's all my daughter Shanna. She's a foodie and has a great talent at pairing different tastes. Then when Stefanie came to work with us she brought a lot of new ideas. Stef's always tinkering with the sandwiches and she makes the BEST soups in town!

What is something that you want your customers to know about you that they may not know?

I used to be skinny when I was younger, LOL.  … I'm a country girl at heart, and I wanted to grow up and own a horse ranch when I was little.

If you wish you could get your favorite coffee at your favorite local coffee shop, tell them about Fire Dept. Coffee. Tell them to reach out to us. We’d love to make it happen, just like we did for Crystal.

Memorial Day is truly observed at Arlington and at cemeteries from coast to coast. It’s observed at small town Main Street parades and at elaborate ceremonies in our largest cities. It’s an opportunity to reflect and remember the military men and women who gave their lives in service of our nation.
