If you love the unmistakable taste of the finest whisky, today is your day to celebrate.
Welcome to World Whisky Day.
If it seems like there’s a holiday for everything these days, you’re not wrong. But on World Whisky Day, we’re all for it.
This holiday is a great opportunity to celebrate the heritage and diversity of whisky (and whiskey, more on that later). It’s also your chance to appreciate the creativity and craftsmanship that lets us enjoy this delicious spirit on our terms.
That may be in a glass and on the rocks, but it may also be in a hot cup of coffee, thanks to Fire Dept. Coffee’s delicious — and non-alcoholic — Spirit Infused Coffee Roasts.
World Whisky Day is a global holiday launched in 2012 by Blair Bowman, a whisky consultant and writer from Scotland. Its goal is to celebrate the diversity and heritage of whisky and introduce more people to this wonderful spirit.
Since its inception, World Whisky Day has grown in popularity and has become a great opportunity for whisky lovers around the world to come together and share their passion for this beverage.
From tastings and pairings to distillery tours, whisky fanatics find endless ways to celebrate. At Fire Dept. Coffee, we choose to celebrate with a mug of our Irish Whiskey Infused Coffee.
Then another. And another.
You’ve likely seen it spelled both ways. So which is correct?
The answer, of course, is … both.
Whisky and whiskey are both distilled spirits made from fermented grain mash, but they can have distinct characteristics depending on their country of origin. The spelling difference offers the first hint of where a particular bottle comes from.
Whisky made in Scotland, Canada and Japan typically does not include an "e" in the spelling. This style of whisky is often referred to as Scotch or Scottish whisky, and is known for its smoky flavors that come from the use of malted barley dried over peat fires. Canadian whisky is smoother and lighter than Scotch, and is typically made from a blend of corn, rye, and barley.
Japanese whisky has only been produced since the early 20th century but has gained a reputation for high quality and complex flavors.
Whiskey made in Ireland and the United States typically includes an "e" in the spelling. Irish whiskey is known for its smooth, mellow flavor, and is made from a blend of malted and unmalted barley that is triple-distilled for a lighter taste.
American whiskey, including bourbon and rye, is made from a mash bill that includes at least 51% corn and is aged in charred oak barrels for a minimum of two years.
These whiskeys often have a sweeter flavor profile than their Scottish counterparts, with notes of caramel, vanilla, and oak.
